The 100,000 Lives Campaign
Memorial
Hermann is among the nation’s leading healthcare institutions
participating in the 100,000 Lives Campaign. Organized by the Institute
for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), the campaign is an effort to
implement changes in hospital care that have been proven to prevent
deaths. The goal of the campaign is to prevent 100,000 deaths nationwide
by June 2006, and every year thereafter. The
100,000 Lives campaign is currently focused on the following areas of
hospital care:
- Deploying rapid
response teams. Several of our hospitals, including Memorial Hermann,
Southwest, Northwest and Katy, are currently deploying rapid response
pilot projects.
- Treating heart
attacks (AMIs). Memorial Hermann hospitals including Southwest,
Memorial City, Katy and The Woodlands have all received state or
national recognition for their performance in this quality indicator.
- Preventing adverse
drug events (ADEs). We’re
coordinating efforts by all our hospitals and collaborating with
other hospitals in the region to implement best practices.
- Preventing catheter-associated infections (central line infections).
- Preventing surgical site infections. Focusing on reducing the risk
of hospital-acquired infections has been a priority for many years,
and Memorial Hermann has proactively implemented best practices and
procedures throughout the system.
- Preventing ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Some of our hospitals,
including Memorial Hermann and Northwest, have already experienced
measurable reductions in VAP rates since best practice protocols
were put in place. Both hospitals have been recognized nationally
for their efforts and results.
All Memorial Hermann
hospitals are actively implementing the best practices associated
with the 100,000 Lives Campaign, customizing them to even better
serve the needs of our patients. Through our early involvement in
the program, we’re already realizing improvements
in clinical results.
