The Only Comprehensive Burn Treatment Center in Houston
The John S. Dunn Sr. Burn Center is the only comprehensive burn treatment center in Houston. Patients from all over the world have received treatment at the Center, including those with serious chemical, thermal and electrical burns.
The burn team provides an entire continuum of care, from intensive to inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation. The center is a collaborative effort between Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School division of plastic surgery.
Scope of Service
The Center cares for patients with burn injuries resulting from flame, scald, chemical or electrical burns and those requiring complicated wound management. Burn patients with associated trauma are cared for in the STICU until stable.
Care Guidelines
We provide comprehensive multidisciplinary care for the adult burn patient population and patients requiring complicated wound management. Necessity and timeliness of care is evaluated according to American Burn Association guidelines and evidence-based practice in collaboration with burn centers around the country. Our goal is to restore patients and their families to a functional level of independent care through education and assistance in meeting their needs.
Admission Criteria
Burn patients are assessed for admission based on guidelines set by the American Burn Association (ABA).
Facility and Equipment
- 14 beds (12 can be managed as ICU or IMU care)
- PT/OT therapy room
- Hydrotherapy tank room
- Shower facility for wound care
- Dedicated rehabilitation area
Referrals
Specialized burn care is provided immediately by the burn team. Critical care referrals are made to the critical care team as required. Care is provided 24/7.
