Diagnosis & Prevention

Diagnostic TechnologiesDiagnostic Technologies

As an international leader in heart care, we offer diagnostic resources and technologies that set the standard for reliability, accuracy and effectiveness, including:

The Weatherhead PET Center
High-tech imaging and clinical expertise join forces in the fight against atherosclerosis at the Weatherhead PET Center.

Founded and directed by Lance Gould, M.D., the Weatherhead PET Center is the first of its kind dedicated to reversing and preventing coronary artery disease. At the Weatherhead PET Center, positron emission tomography (PET) scans accurately identify early coronary disease in patients with mild or no symptoms and help monitor patients with advanced disease.

The Weatherhead PET Center combines the latest scientific technology with personalized care to help prevent and reverse coronary heart disease.

Using Positron Emission Tomography (PET), the center can diagnose heart conditions non-invasively with 96 to 98 percent accuracy – regardless of whether the individual has symptoms. This allows for treatment as much as 10 to 15 years before a heart attack occurs, significantly reducing the risk of death from blocked arteries.

Our specialists at the Weatherhead Center are pioneers in efforts to reverse or stop the progression of heart disease. They use a comprehensive medical approach that includes diet, cholesterol-reducing drugs and programs to reduce or eliminate risk factors.

This not only decreases the chance of heart-related sudden death, but lessens the need for bypass surgery and balloon dilation. However, if these procedures are eventually necessary, the regimen can also improve outcomes.

Electrophysiology
The Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute offers comprehensive arrhythmia care with the most advanced technologies.

Electrophysiology experts collaborate with interventional cardiologists, heart failure specialists and primary care physicians to determine the best treatment for each patient.

Innovations and therapies include:

  • Placement and programming of implantable devices, such as pacemakers, defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization devices
  • Complex mapping and ablation of arrhythmias, including 3-D imaging
  • One of only a few centers with experience and expertise in pulmonary vein isolation to treat atrial fibrillation.

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (MR) technology
We offer superior, low-risk MR technologies that do not require radiation or catheters and provide images showing exactly how the heart is functioning.

Unique imaging capabilities
These include a special X-ray system that allows three-dimensional viewing of the affected area, offering a better alternative for detecting aneurysms.

Specialized diagnostic options
We can diagnose aneurysms and vessel abnormalities without injecting a contrast agent, a process that is especially beneficial to patients with kidney disease.

Nuclear cardiology and echocardiography laboratories
Memorial Hermann uses sophisticated equipment to provide early, non-invasive, highly accurate detection of heart problems. It is especially beneficial to patients who have passed a stress test but are concerned because they have a family history of heart disease.

Holter monitoring
This technology allows for continuous recording of the heart’s electrical activity while you go about your daily activities. It helps physicians diagnose abnormal heart rhythms and develop the most effective treatment plan.

Trans-telephonic assistance
Also known as Event Recorder Transmissions, this enables patients who experience intermittent cardiac symptoms to record their EKG waveform and transmit the information through any ordinary phone line for diagnostic interpretation.
