Volunteer Opportunities for Teens

Teens who volunteer at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital can experience a wide range of hospital duties, including:

Admissions & Patient Access
The patient’s point of entry to the hospital.

Burn Intensive Care Unit
This unit prefers volunteers who have some experience with burn patients or who are burn survivors. The greatest need is for peer support.

Cardiology, Cardiac Care Unit, CardiovascularIntensive Care Unit (CVICU), Cardiac Catheterization Lab
Care for patients with heart problems.

Central Supply
Packaging and transporting supplies throughout the hospital.

Concierge Desk
Assist guests with wayfinding, travel and lodging arrangements, and other general non-clinical needs (things you might ask a hotel concierge about).

Day Surgery
Where patients have minor surgeries (no overnight stay is necessary).

Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU)
Where seizure activity in the brain is monitored.

Food & Nutrition
Dietary planning and food service for all patients (plus general cafeteria selections) in our hospital.

General Medicine, Medical Intermediate Unit (MIMU), Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
Where patients with severe infections are treated.

Gamma Knife
Where some patients with brain tumors and lesions are treated.

Hospital Education
Help assure that employees are meeting their educational requirements.

Human Resources
Handles employee and prospective employee needs.

Information Desk
Greeting guests, giving patient information, helping guests find their way around the hospital.

Inpatient Rehabilitation/Transitional Care Facility
Therapy and activity for patients who are recovering from brain or bodily injuries, helping them fine-tune everyday skills.

Laboratory Services
Processing and keeping records of specimens that are collected from patients.

Mail and E-mail Delivery
Delivering mail and e-mails to patients in their rooms.

Nephrology
The unit that cares for people with kidney disease.

Neuroscience Units: Stroke Unit, Neurology, Neurotrauma Intensive Care Unit (NTICU)
Care for patients who have brain and spinal cord injuries, those who have had surgery on their brain or spinal cord and those recovering from stroke.

Nuclear Medicine
Prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease through the use of radioactive materials in the body.

Operating Room & Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
Surgical and post-surgical care.

Wayfinders
Lead visitors to their hospital destinations.

Patient Ambassador (Patient Relations)
Checking in with patients just to visit and helping to identify and resolve any potential problems they may be having.

Radiology
Imaging services including X-ray, ultrasound, CT scanning and more.

Sewing and knitting
Make baby caps, blankets, gowns and stockings for pediatric patients.

Shock Trauma Intensive Care Unit (STICU)
Where care is provided for very critically injured patients.

Transplant Unit, Transplant Intensive Care Unit (TICU)
Where care is provided for critical transplant patients. They may be recent transplant recipients, awaiting a transplant, or suffering transplant complications.

Waiting Room Volunteers
Assist families with needs, as well as, aid with general office duties.

Women’s Services
Where mothers-to-be, new mothers, new babies and women with female health issues receive care.
