Heart and Vascular Services
Memorial Hermann actively pursues promising research, offering patients the opportunity to be among the first in the world to benefit from advances in cardiology. There are currently more than 40 active heart and vascular focused research protocols across the Memorial Hermann system, with the majority taking place at Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute-Texas Medical Center.
Medical research opens the door to tremendous social benefit. In the last 50 years alone, successful research has led to lowered morbidity and mortality rates, increased longevity and sophisticated new weapons in the fight against major categories of disease.
Memorial Hermann is committed to progressive patient care, improved outcomes and innovation. A sample cross-section of cardiovascular research currently in progress or recently completed at Memorial Hermann includes the list below.

Lead Physician: Francisco Maislos, MD, Memorial Hermann Southwest
This Phase III active (Warfarin) controlled, randomized, double-blind, parallel-arm study is evaluating the efficacy and safety of Apixaban for use in preventing stroke and systemic embolism in subjects with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Begun in August 2007, the trial will study 15,000 subjects for a minimum of four years.
