Physical and Occupational Therapy

Memorial Hermann’s Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation program offers the highest-level treatment in physical therapy and occupational therapy in Houston. Our physical therapists and occupational therapists are highly skilled, certified and friendly. Our facilities, designed with you in mind, utilize the latest equipment and technology to promote wellbeing and help you reach your personal health goals.

We offer a benefit to community health by providing access to sports dieticians, strength and conditioning coaches, and generally helping athletes of all ages reach their maximum potential. We also have partnerships with local university athletic departments and professional sports teams, providing services such as orthopedic and primary care, athletic training, lifestyle coaching and more.

What is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy diagnoses and treats patients of all ages and abilities by developing, maintaining and/or restoring the body’s movement and functional abilities. Whether you are working on improving your athletic performance or recovering from an injury, our physical therapists will help you resolve your pain and return to normal, everyday activities.

Physical therapists are concerned with all aspects of a patient’s quality of life – physical, psychological, emotional and social – and how a disruption in one of these can affect their overall well-being.

What to Expect from Physical Therapy at Memorial Hermann

The average physical therapy program can be broken down into the following basic steps:

  • Initial comprehensive patient examination
  • Clinical evaluation of the findings from this examination
  • Formulation of a diagnosis, prognosis and plan
  • Consultation with the patient, including possible referral to a healthcare specialist
  • Implementation of an intervention/treatment program based on clinical diagnosis and individual patient needs
  • Evaluation of results, positive or negative, from the implementation of this program
  • Provide recommendations for future patient self-care

First-time patients should expect a detailed discussion of your medical history and the reasons for your visit. Our staff will then help you set your therapy goals – are you hoping to return to normal function after an injury, or are you looking to elevate your current athletic abilities? This information is important for our trained professionals to develop a therapy regimen that is specific to each patient’s needs.

During each session, patients will be asked to perform certain physical activities and exercises. In this case, it is advisable to dress in comfortable clothes that allow for maximum movement. It is a good idea to eat beforehand as well. All of our facilities have showers, making it convenient for patients to fit in therapy sessions throughout their day.

Physical Therapy Specialties

At Memorial Hermann, we provide targeted exercise and associated intervention to optimize the body’s function from the inside out. This includes everything from joint manipulation and custom exercise regimens to more passive treatments such as active release, dry needling and Graston Technique/IASTM. By focusing on providing education as well as relieving stress and other physical conditions, we help promote positive recovery aspects and teach our patients how to treat themselves.
