Dr. Stephen A. Thompson earned his medical degree in Canada at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He completed his residency in neurology at Memorial University, St John's, Newfoundland, Canada, and a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology, electroencephalogram (EEG) and epilepsy at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

Dr. Thompson started practicing in 2006 and came to Houston in 2014. Board certified in neurology and epilepsy, his primary clinical interests are adult epilepsy, epilepsy surgery, critical care EEG, magnetoencephalography (MEG, a technique for mapping brain activity) and stereoeletroencephalography (SEEG, a minimally invasive procedure for identifying the source of epileptic seizures). His research interests include wideband electrophysiology and multimodal neuroimaging.

An assistant professor of neurology at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), Dr. Thompson is the director of the Stereotactic EEG (SEEG) Program at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center.
