Memorial Hermann Health System is the largest not-for-profit health system in Southeast Texas. With 15 hospitals, over 5,000 affiliated physicians and numerous specialty programs, we really are all about Advancing Health.
Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute offers two post-graduate residency programs to develop advanced practitioners in the fields of orthopedic and sports physical therapy. The programs afford residents unmatched access to unique learning opportunities, with over 150 hours of one-on-one clinical mentorship with board-certified and fellowship-trained clinicians. Our residency programs are 13 months long and begin yearly in August.
Memorial Hermann orthopedic residents have achieved 100% graduation rate and 100% pass rate on the OCS exam while the sports residents have achieved 96% graduation rate and a 100% pass rate on the SCS exam. Many have gone on to complete fellowship training, become affiliated with professional sports teams, or teach in both residency and entry level programs across the country.
Application opens on October 2nd.

Located in the world’s largest medical center, and its surrounding areas, the opportunities for learning are vast. With collaboration from both D1 college athletics and local high schools, there is never a shortage of unique experiences.
Our program prides itself on developing leaders in the field of physical therapy. To accomplish this, our mentors invest heavily into the resident’s academic, professional and personal growth. Our faculty fosters this growth, with many having experience in residency and/or fellowship training.
Our curriculum is continuously tuned to provide the most up-to-date evidence-based practice. The curriculum is designed to not only prepare the residents for passing their specialty exam, but to keep them at the forefront of an ever-evolving field.
We are proud to announce that Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Residency Programs have recently achieved re-accreditation for a term of 10 years from the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE). Because of the rarity of ten-year terms for re-accreditation, our long-term accreditation period signifies a huge accomplishment and validation of our residency programs. Over the past 6 years, our residency programs have grown exponentially in capacity, stature and reputation due to the passion and dedication of our residency and research leadership team, faculty and residents.
Program accomplishments that are helping to advance sports medicine and orthopedic care in our region and beyond:
