Volunteer at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center

As a Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center volunteer, you will play an integral role at the first hospital built in the Texas Medical Center. Our goal is to ensure that your volunteer experience is as rewarding for you as it is beneficial for our patients, families, visitors and caregivers.

Volunteer Opportunities

Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center is a place where you can make a difference for someone in a time of need at both our pediatric and adult facilities. Console patients during a crisis, comfort a baby in a nursery or guide visitors to their location – the choice is yours.

Depending on your interest and placement availability, you can volunteer in any of the following areas:

  • Administration: Volunteers assist office staff by filing, making copies, running errands and performing other tasks and special job-related duties as requested. Volunteers are placed in hospital departments such as Education, Human Resources, Internal Communications, International Services, Marketing, Public Relations and Volunteer Services.
  • Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital: Volunteers who are selected to serve at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital help our pediatric patients take their minds off of the hospital environment by playing games, reading books and offering supplemental help to the hospital staff. Areas where volunteers are placed include the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Labor and Delivery, Women’s Services, Roger and Debbie Clemens Pediatric Wing and the Children’s Special Care Unit.
  • Clinical Areas:  Volunteers at Memorial Hermann-TMC may serve in various clinical areas of the hospital by providing patient assistance as well as support to clinical staff.  Clinics include: Mischer Neuroscience Institute, Heart & Vascular Institute, Texas Trauma Institute, Cancer Center, Texas Liver Center, Breast Clinic, John S. Dunn Sr. Burn Center, Adult Day Surgery, Digestive Disease Center and Hyperbaric/Wound Care.
  • Emergency Medicine: Memorial Hermann-TMC is home to the busiest Level I trauma center in the country. Volunteering in any of our Emergency departments will allow an individual to gain hands-on experience and assist staff in many capacities.
  • Hospital Operations: Volunteers may work in areas that are vital to the Campus day-to-day operations and keep the hospital running smoothly, including: Pharmacy, Occupational Health, Food and Nutrition, Environmental Services, Central Supply and Admissions.
  • Information Desks: Information desk volunteers assist guests who are attempting to locate a patient or have general questions. They also direct visitors to patient rooms and other locations on Campus and in the Texas Medical Center.
  • Outreach Initiatives: Volunteers make reading material, games and snacks available to hospital patients and guests by taking the supplies to units, waiting areas and various Campus common areas. Outreach programs include: the Rolling Library, the Snackin’ Wagon, Popcorn Cart and Game Train.
  • Patient Care Areas: Volunteers assisting in these areas offer conversation to assist the nursing staff and help the unit run smoothly. Areas include: Elderly Acute Care, General Medicine, Oncology, Neurology IMU and Ortho Trauma.
  • Special Groups: Many organizations and groups serve on Campus. If you are interested in special group volunteer activities, please contact the office.
