Dr. Steve Bynon graduated from medical school at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in 1981. He completed his surgery residency at the University of Alabama Birmingham in 1990 as Chief Resident. Following the completion of his residency in general surgery he trained in abdominal transplantation completing the multi-organ fellowship at the University of Nebraska Omaha under the direction of Byers W. Shaw Jr. in 1993.

Dr. Bynon returned to the University of Alabama in 1993 to initiate their pediatric liver transplant program and in 1994 he was named Director of the liver and pediatric transplant programs. In 2005 he was the first recipient of the Arnold G. Diethelm Chair in Surgery. He was named to "top Doctors" in the USA in 2000. Dr. Bynon moved in July of 2011 to UT Health Medical School in Houston to become director of the Division of Immunology and Solid Organ Transplantation and is affiliated with Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center.

Dr. Bynon serves on advisor boards for BCBSQT and Optum Health Care. He has been active in UNOS on the Liver Intestine subcommittee and Regional Review Boards.

Dr. Bynon has extensive experience in liver transplantation performing over 800 procedures in his career. He has special interest in the surgical management of portal hypertension, benign and malignant tumors of the liver and cholangiocarcinoma.
