Gender-Affirmation Surgical Program

The team at Memorial Hermann, led by renowned surgeon Daniel J. Freet, MD, provides a full range of gender-affirming care, including facial and chest surgeries, vaginoplasty, metoidioplasty and phalloplasty. We adhere to the guidelines set forth by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) to provide leading-edge surgical procedures with high quality patient experience.

Our multidisciplinary approach begins with getting to know each patient as a unique individual. This is not a one-size-fits-all program. We listen intently to understand where each person is coming from, where they want to be, and how we can work together to achieve the best possible outcome.

Along with surgical procedures, we incorporate all of the other essential health care elements of the transition journey. By collaborating with disciplines like urology, gynecology and primary care, we provide a complete, holistic process.

Daniel J. Freet, MD, FACS

Patients come from around the nation to experience Dr. Freet's innovative expertise. He is a genuine ally of the transgender community, and it is his honor and privilege to care for their diverse needs.

A board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Freet specializes in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. He is an associate professor of reconstructive and plastic surgery at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the World Professional Association of Transgender Health, the Society for Surgical Education, American Society of Plastic Surgery, Texas Society of Plastic Surgery and Harris County Medical Association.

• Facial masculinization surgery: Transforms feminine facial features into masculine features
• Tracheal augmentation: Creation of an “Adam’s Apple,” using an implant constructed from existing cartilage
• Chest masculinization surgery: Removal of breast tissue and flattening/contouring of the chest
• Hysterectomy: Removal of female reproductive organs, which may include ovaries, uterus and cervix
• Oophorectomy: Removal of one or both ovaries
• Metoidioplasty: Creation of a penis using existing clitoral tissue
• Phalloplasty: Creation of a penis using tissue from other parts of the body

• Facial feminization surgery (FFS): Transforms masculine facial features into feminine features
• Tracheal shave/tracheal chondroplasty: Reduces the prominence of the “Adam’s Apple” by removing thyroid cartilage
• Chest feminizing surgery: Breast augmentation using saline or silicone implants, or fat transfer
• Body contouring with/without fat transfer: Creates a feminine-looking waist, hips and abdomen with liposuction and/or fat transfer
• Orchiectomy: Removal of one or both testicles
• Vaginoplasty: Creation of a vagina using existing penile and scrotal tissue
